The Village of Cumberland is offering rebates of up to $50 for new low-flow showerheads. Low flow showerheads can conserve hundreds of litres of water every month, which reduces utility bills and heating costs.
Residents who replace higher flow showerheads may be able to save more than 50% on the water and energy cost of showering. Older showerheads can use up to 20 litres per minute (LPM), while newer low-flow options are 5.6- 7.6 LPM without affecting the feel of the shower.
To apply for a rebate, bring the following items to the Village Office:
• The original receipt
• The packaging from the new showerhead(s)
• The old showerhead(s)
• Proof of address
Staff can assist you to apply for the rebate. Residents can receive a rebate of up to $50 by cheque for eligible showerheads. The rebate program will continue until all rebates are given out, or until December 29, 2017.
• Receipts must be dated August 1, 2017 or later
• Packaging is required as proof that the new showerhead has a flow rate of 7.6 LPM or less (2 gallons per minute)
• One rebate application per address in the Village of Cumberland, which may include up to two showerheads
• Rebates are only offered for replacement showerheads, not for showerheads in new bathrooms/showers
• Rebates are for the purchase price of up to two showerheads, to a maximum of $50
How to choose a showerhead
A low-flow showerhead won’t save as much water if it feels low-flow. When purchasing a showerhead, look for one that is low-flow without affecting the feel of the shower. Options may include:
• Showerheads marked with the WaterSense® label are a good option. These showerheads meet the low-flow requirement and have been certified by a third-party laboratory to provide satisfactory coverage and spray intensity while using less water.
• Aerating showerheads, which mix air with water
• Laminar showerheads, which create many individual streams of water and produce less steam
• Showerheads with a “trickle” button, that allow the user to stop all but a trickle while lathering or shampooing, then resume showering at the same flow rate and temperature when ready.
How can I tell if my showerhead is low-flow?
To measure your showerhead flow rate:
1. Turn on your shower, using the settings you normally use while showering.
2. Hold a container with metric measurement markings on it (such as a pitcher or measuring cup that measures litres or millilitres) under the showerhead to collect the full flow of the shower for six seconds. For better accuracy, use a clock or timer.
3. Multiply the volume of water collected by 10 to get the flow rate in litres per minute. For example, if the volume collected was 1 litre (1000 millilitres) then the flow rate is 10 LPM.
The BC Building Code maximum flow is 9.5 LPM. If your shower’s LPM is over 9.5, it’s a good idea to replace your showerhead with one that has a lower flow.
How much water can I save?
A low-flow showerhead saves water and energy if you still take the same length of shower after installing it.
For example, a person who takes an 8-minute shower daily and replaces their 10 LPM showerhead with a 7.6 LPM showerhead could save 7000 litres of water a year. If the original showerhead was 20 LPM, they could save 36 000 litres of water per year.
That would save both the cost of 7000-36 000 litres of water on your utility bill, and the cost of energy to heat the water.
