Digital Sign Board to Support Cumberland Lake Park Parking Management

Posted on

The Village of Cumberland has installed a digital sign board to provide Cumberland Lake Park visitors advanced notice of parking conditions during peak periods. Sign management for this pilot project will a shared venture between the Village and the park operator, Cumberland Lake Wilderness Society.

The sign has been installed at the corner of Dunsmuir Avenue and Sutton Road. A notice will be displayed on the sign when Cumberland Lake Park day use and boat launch parking lots are at capacity. At these times, park users are encouraged to alter their travel plans by bicycling or using other means of active transportation, or choosing to recreate at an alternative location. When day-use parking spots are available the sign will be turned off.

Overflow parking adjacent to the park on Comox Lake Road can lead to major congestion issues, which may compromise emergency vehicle access in the event an incident occurs. All Lake Park visitors are requested to consider emergency vehicle access when parking, and to avoid parking on the active sections of the roadway.

The Village continues to work with adjacent land managers on parking issues on Comox Lake Road, which is under the jurisdiction and is the responsibility of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

This pilot project will be active over the next two months and the sign will be removed in late summer 2021.
