Working Toward a New Model of Economic Development

This page was last reviewed on July 21, 2017.

In 2016 the Village of Cumberland withdrew from the Economic Development Service of the Comox Valley Regional District. As part of Council’s Strategic Priorities the Village explored new models of providing economic development services.

With funding provided through a grant from the Rural Dividend Fund, the Village hired EcoPlan, a small Vancouver-based planning firm with community and economic development experience to research and evaluate possible models.

Guided by community engagement EcoPlan identified six possible models, and this list was further refined to three options. A final recommendation to move forward with an in-house distributed model of economic development was made, as this model best supports community values, taking into account other considerations such as feasibility and cost, and the final report includes an implementation plan to move the project forward.
