Cumberland Achieves Carbon Neutrality

Posted on

Cumberland has been recognized by the Province of BC for demonstrating the community’s commitment of taking action on climate change and to reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2017, the Village’s carbon emissions inventory totaled 454 tonnes. The Village was able to reduce our carbon emissions by 139 tonnes of carbon savings from the organics collection pilot program. The offsets generated by the organics collection pilot program is similar to 2016 offsets. As a result, our carbon offsets purchase requirement is 315 tonnes.

While energy use in 2017 increased for the Cumberland and Bevan Road construction project and for facility heating and increased diesel consumption due to the cold winter and snow removal, carbon offsets for the 2017 year were purchased from Quadra Island Forestland Conservation Project as first priority, and the British Columbia portfolio as second priority.

Cumberland is a signatory to the BC Climate Action Charter.
