Village Launches Creation of a New Economic Development Strategy

Posted on

The Village of Cumberland is excited to announce the launch of the creation of a Cumberland Economic Development Strategy, which will guide economic development initiatives and decision-making in Cumberland over the next five years.

The Strategy builds on work undertaken following the Village’s withdrawal from the economic development service of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) in early 2016. As part of this work, the community identified economic planning as a core service of economic development in Cumberland; creating an Economic Development Strategy was a recommended first step.

Community input and involvement is critical in determining the direction that the Strategy should take. As part of the first round of community engagement, the Village invites the community to share their thoughts through the Community and Business Survey before it closes on February 18th.

“I’m glad we’re finally able to move ahead with a Cumberland Economic Development Strategy,” said Mayor Leslie Baird. “I’m looking forward to hearing the community’s feedback.”

Funding for the Economic Development Strategy has been provided through a grant from the Rural Dividend Fund. EcoPlan, a Vancouver-based community and economic development planning firm, has been hired to support the project. The Village has also formed an Economic Development Strategy Steering Committee consisting of representatives from the general public, local business and not-for-profit groups to provide guidance and direction to the process.
