Village of Cumberland Secures a New Solid Waste Contractor

Posted on

Cumberland Council is pleased to announce that the Village has engaged a new solid waste collection contractor. Emterra Environmental is a Canadian company with Cumberland-based operations that values customer service and environmental leadership. In order to secure the contract with Emterra Environmental, collection day will switch from Wednesdays to Mondays effective March 30, 2020. A new collection schedule will be delivered to residential mail boxes next week.

For many years the Village was fortunate to have had a very affordable and local solid waste contractor. However in February 2019 the company was sold and the contract transferred to another company. “We know what a challenging year it has been for Cumberland residents,” says Mayor Leslie Baird, “and we are confident that Emterra Environmental will provide quality collection service at competitive rates. We ask that residents do their best to adapt to Monday as the new collection day.”

The Village has been saving for a number of years to help ease the impact of unavoidable increases to solid waste fees. The increased costs are a result of changes in the collection industry and expected increases in tipping fees at the regional Waste Management Centre.

The Village has also had the benefit of participating in the CVRD organics pilot program at very little cost. With full implementation of the organics program in 2022, the Village must contribute to the operation of the new organics composting facilities. Solid waste utility rates will increase over the next five years to cover these increasing costs.
