2026 General Local Election – Notice of Nomination

Public notice is given that nominations for the offices of:
MAYOR – One to be Elected
COUNCILLOR – Four to be Elected
SCHOOL TRUSTEE – One to be Elected for Area 3, Village of Cumberland
will be received by the Chief Election Officer or a designated person, during the Nomination Period as follows:
Nomination Period Begins: September 1, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.
Close of Nominations: September 11, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.

Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4.p.m., except holidays

To deliver your nomination at the Village office, candidates are encouraged to make an appointment by email or phone to Rachel Parker, Chief Election Officer, at rparker@cumberland.ca or 250-336-2291. For emailed and faxed nominations, please contact the Village at 250-336-2291 if you do not receive confirmation of receipt. The obligation to ensure that the nomination documents are received in accordance with the Local Government Act rests with the person being nominated.
Interested persons can obtain information on the requirements and procedures for making nominations, including nomination forms, at cumberland.ca/candidates, at the Village office or by calling 250-336-2291.
Qualifications for Office
A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:
- Canadian citizen;
- 18 years of age or older on general voting day October 17, 2026;
- resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed;
- For nomination for mayor or councillor, not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or being nominated for, being elected to or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.
- For nomination for school trustee, not disqualified under the School Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or being nominated for, being elected to or holding office as a trustee, or be otherwise disqualified by law.
Candidate Expense Limits
In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act for the 2026 general local election the following expense limits for candidates during the campaign period apply:
Mayor $ 12,323,78
Councillor $ 6,161.89
School Trustee $ 6,161.89
Third Party Advertising Limits
In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2026 general local elections, the following third party advertising limits apply:
Directed advertising expense limits: $ 924.28
Cumulative third party advertising limit: $ 184,856.70
