New Water Conservation Bylaw Proposes Stage 4 Water Restriction Option

Posted on

Council is considering a new water conservation bylaw that would add the option for Stage 4 water restrictions in an emergency or a severe water shortage. Under Stage 4 restrictions water use would generally be restricted to drinking, food preparation and personal hygiene. The new bylaw also allows Village staff to determine water restriction stages based on water storage levels, weather forecasts, and typical water demands.

Bylaw compliance for water restriction contraventions follows the Village’s progressive enforcement model that starts with community engagement and education and voluntary compliance. A new ticket fine for contravention under Stage 4 is proposed at $3000. Other ticket fines for contraventions to the bylaw have not changed with a ticket under Stage 1 restrictions at $100, Stage 2 at $200, Stage 3 at $500.

Currently the Village is under Stage 1 restrictions on outdoor water use. Residents are encouraged to use water conservatively and watch for news of further restrictions as the weather heats up.

Council will consider adopting the new bylaw at the July 28 Council meeting. Agendas can be found on the Council Meetings page.
