Bear Aware Garbage Tagging Campaign Starts October 2
Posted on
In an effort to encourage residents keep their garbage securely stored until the morning of garbage day, Village staff and volunteers will be tagging garbage containers brought out the night before with yellow Bear Aware stickers.
A bear that has been conditioned to garbage poses a threat to human safety and may need to be destroyed. Recycling, even rinsed, will still emit odours that attract bears into the community. Yard waste and fallen fruit are also a bear attractant.
The program will help reduce human-bear conflicts in Cumberland. The garbage tagging campaign will take place on October 2, October 9 and October 16.
