National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Recognized in the Village
Posted on
On September 30th, 2021 we will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
As one of the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015, the federal government, in collaboration with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples were called upon to establish a statutory holiday to honor Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.
In recognition of the harms and mistakes of the past and the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, Cumberland residents are encouraged to improve our relationships with Indigenous communities through self-education, personal reflection, and by participating in Orange Shirt Day. If you wish to know more about the calls to action, please visit Truth and Reconciliation calls to action.
The Village is committed to a priority focus of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Council and staff endeavor to have open and effective communication with the K’ómoks First Nation to strengthen our connections with one another.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a standard statutory holiday and municipal facilities will be closed to the public. We will be open to serve you during our regular business hours on Friday, October 1.
We are honoured to live in the unceded traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation.
