Posted on

As you may have heard, Cumberland Village Council has adopted a new Parks & Recreation Fees bylaw that prescribes new fees for services effective September 1, 2024.

Key highlights for individual patrons:

  • Admission and membership fees are increasing approximately 7% September 1
  • Monthly memberships remain 10x the cost of a single admission; annual memberships remain 6x the cost of a monthly membership
  • All memberships purchased before September 1 are subject to the current fees
  • Fees for instructed classes and other registered programs are not affected by the new bylaw

Key highlights for user groups:

  • All park and facility bookings for September 1 and later will be subjected to the new fees, other than those that have already been booked/paid in advance
  • Fees for individual sports fields have not changed but may be part of the ongoing regional sports field allocation study
  • The bylaw includes new fees for street closures, late key returns and non-exclusive commercial bookings

Why are we updating our fees?

Parks and Recreation are essential public services that benefit both individuals and the community. As such, they are funded through a combination of taxation and user fees. The current fees were established in 2019. A lot has changed since then, not the least of which has been significantly high annual consumer price index (CPI) increases, which have in turn led to increases in the costs to operate services in the Parks & Recreation department.

The updated Parks & Recreation fees are intended to catch the Village’s fees up to the rising cost of goods and services over the next five years in order to continue providing the services our community enjoys while also remaining responsible to Cumberland taxpayers.
