No. 2 Dam Project Receives Additional $2.7 Million in Funding

The Village of Cumberland is receiving over $2,700,000 through the Strategic Priorities Fund to support the replacement of the No. 2 Dam and spillway. The Strategic Priorities Fund is a federally funded program that supports infrastructure projects that are beyond the financial capacity of a single local government fund, under the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) Community stream in BC.
“This funding couldn’t come at a more important time for Cumberland,” says Mayor Vickey Brown. “The No. 2 Dam is a piece of infrastructure our community has relied on for generations, and upgrading it means our residents can count on safe, reliable drinking water for decades to come. I want to thank the Union of BC Municipalities and the Strategic Priorities Fund for recognizing not just the value of this project, but the value of communities like ours. Our Council pushed hard to secure this support, meeting several times with both our MP Gord Johns and MLA Josie Osborne. I’m proud of the work that went into making it happen. This is a win for the long-term resilience of Cumberland.”
The No. 2 reservoir is an important part of the Village’s drinking water supply system. The current dam structure requires seismic upgrades and further infrastructure to ensure that during rain events the flow of water does not create challenges downstream. This will support having safe reliable drinking water for this vibrant growing community.
No. 2 Lake Reservoir
The new funding from the Strategic Priorities Fund is in addition to $4.475 million awarded to the Village in 2022 from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The additional funding will help the Village move forward with the project without any significant burden to fund the project from Village funds.
On July 30, 2026, the federal and provincial governments along with the Union of BC Municipalities announced a federal investment of more than $152 million to support 55 community infrastructure and capacity-building projects. The Village of Cumberland is one of the 55 recently announced projects.
The Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) Community stream is a transfer-based program that provides $2.5 billion per year in funding to communities across Canada. The Province of British Columbia receives over $310 million annually from this stream, which is administered by the Union of BC Municipalities and distributed to local governments through the Community Works Fund, Strategic Priorities Fund, and Metro Vancouver Regional Fund.
