Village Moving Forward in Planning for Facilities Renewal

The opening of the new Fire Hall in 2021 was the first step in a long term plan to modernize Village facilities. The next step is to build a new Operations Centre for the Engineering and Public Works Department. The current facility on Dunsmuir Avenue at First Street is aging and would require significant upgrades and more space to meet current standards. A 2022 Municipal Facilities Update outlines this overall Facilities plan.
Relocating the operations centre outside the Village core would give the new facility a larger land area and allow the existing facility on Dunsmuir Avenue to continue to operate during construction. Freeing up this space on Dunsmuir Avenue also creates opportunities to renovate or redevelop the other Village facilities in that block including the Village office, Council Chamber, old Fire Hall, Recreation Centre, Cultural Centre and parking lots.
The Village has completed baseline and feasibility studies for 30 acres of Village-owned land at Union Road, which was funded largely by grants. The Village has an opportunity to leverage surplus land on Union Road to help raise funds for construction, reducing the cost to taxpayers.
A new webpage shares information about this project. Community engagement is upcoming, with details and dates to be announced. The community will be asked to weigh in on the long-term plan, including different options related to use of surplus land at Union Road to help raise funds for renewal of Village facilities.
