Parks and Trails Flood Closures in Effect

Posted on

The Coal Creek Historic Park Disc Golf Course and select trails in the Cumberland Community Forest Park remain closed due to flood damage following the January 30th rain event.

Following the January 30, 2026 flood event, Village crews have completed initial damage assessments to parks assets in the Perseverance Creek area of the Cumberland Community Forest and Coal Creek Historic Park.

The following parks and trails closures remain in effect:

  1. Coal Creek Historic Park Disc Golf Course
  2. The following trails in the Cumberland Community Forest:
    • Hai Gai Access Trail and Perseverance Creek Bridge (accessed from Chinatown connecting to Coal Creek Trail, DCDH, and Knuckers)
    • Hai Gai Trail

In particular, extensive damage has occurred to the Perseverance Creek Bridge and its trail approaches in the Cumberland Community Forest Park. The Village has initiated recovery discussions with community partner organizations – UROC and the Cumberland Community Forest Society – but given the location of the bridge in the Perseverance Creek Floodplain, recovery planning and response is expected to take time.

Crews continue to assess trails in the Cumberland Community Forest and trails beyond, in coordination with the United Riders of Cumberland. Residents are encouraged to obey all park and trail closures and to stay away from fast moving creeks.

For clarity, the following parks and trails remain open:

  • Coal Creek Historic Park: Chinatown and No. 1 Japanese Town Historic Sites, and the Wellington Colliery Trail
  • The Wellington Colliery Trail west of Comox Lake Road (Comox Lake access)
  • All other trails in the Cumberland Community Forest
