Perseverance Creek Temporary Crossing Update
Posted on
The Village of Cumberland has now completed construction of a temporary trail ford across a channel of Perseverance Creek in the Cumberland Community Forest Park, south of the Chinatown Historic Site and in the vicinity of Hai Gai and China Creek Trails. Trails in the area have now been re-opened to public use.
The work is in response to the closure of the Perseverance Creek bridge due to flood damage from the January 2026 storm event.
Hazards remain in the area including washouts, unstable creek banks and hazardous trees. The stream crossing may not be passable at moderate to high flows. Trail users are asked to exercise extra caution, stay on route, avoid stopping in the area, and to use alternate routes during periods of high stream flow.
Staying on the trail will also help mitigate damage to the sensitive riparian areas. Per the province’s Water Sustainability Act, the Village received Section 11 approval from the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship for the project.
The Village is also completing a comprehensive risk assessment of the flood area and potential impacts to critical infrastructure and cultural values. This work will help inform long term planning for flood effected trails in the area as part of the Cumberland Forest Land Strategy project.
