The April 6, 2020 Council meeting was streamed live through the Village’s new Youtube Channel. See the April 6, 2020 meeting page to watch the video and read the meeting agenda.
Here is a summary of meeting highlights:
Community Grant Program
Council allocated $6,000 to the Cumberland Community School Society working in collaboration with the Cumberland Weird Church to provide the Cumberland Food Share program. The program includes a Food Shed at the Weird Church and a food box program to support families and individuals in need due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Find out more about the Food Share and how to register.
Council also allocated $4,000 to the Cumberland Business Society to engage a contractor to create a business improvement area plan, which will guide collaboration between the Village and the business community in creating a business improvement area bylaw.
Utility Billing
Council has postponed the payment deadline for this year’s first two quarter utility billing periods to September 14, 2020 in order to give some relief to residents and businesses affected financially by the COVID-19 pandemic.
While residents will be encouraged to make payments or partial payments as they are able, the 10% penalty will not be imposed on any outstanding amounts until the new deadline. Residents and businesses should receive the first quarter utility bill later in April.
2020 Property Taxes
Council also considered options for the penalty date for 2020 property taxes and made no change to regular due date of July 2.
The Province announced on April 1, 2020 that school tax rates for commercial properties (Classes 4, 5 and 6), which are collected by the Village, will be reduced by 50% for the 2020 tax year.
Residents can explore provincial tax deferral programs for seniors over 55 and for families with children. These program will become available for applications in May 2020 once you receive your property tax notice from the Village.
The Village will update residents and businesses on any further announcement from the Province on financial relief regarding property taxes.
