Cumberland Set to Launch Curbside Organics Collection Pilot Program
Posted on
On June 12, one container of garbage and unlimited yardwaste/organics will be collected.
Beginning June 19, 2013, approximately 1300 residential customers will receive weekly curbside collection of organic material, which will be turned into nutrient-rich compost. This pilot program is part of the region’s commitment to reduce the amount of residual waste going to the landfill.
For the pilot program, households will be asked to provide a lidded 77 litre container and place all collected yard trimmings and organics into that one bin.
Residents will be receiving details of the program through a guide that will be delivered to participating households before the program begins. Stickers will also be provided to identify their curbside bin as an organics container.
You can include the following kitchen scraps in your organics container:
- meat and bones
- fish and shellfish
- grains and pasta
- dairy products
- plate scrapings
Line your containers with newspaper or you may use paper bags inside your collection container.
