Environment Canada has issued a hot weather alert for East Vancouver Island, including Cumberland. Temperatures may reach the mid- to upper 30s this week.
The alert states that everyone is at risk of heat-related illness, but those most vulnerable to high temperatures include young children, pregnant women, the elderly, those working or exercising in the heat, persons with chronic illnesses, people living alone in un-air-conditioned homes, and the homeless.
Environment Canada recommends that residents:
- Drink plenty of water even before feeling thirsty,
- Stay in a cool place, and
- Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
