Nikkei No Haka Cemetery Fence Project Set to Begin
Posted on
As part of the Village’s Japanese Canadian Legacy Project, the replacement of the existing fence at the Nikkei No Haka Cemetery is set to begin. The project scope includes the replacement of the wooden picket fence built in 2003 and the installation of interpretive signposts.
Construction crews will be on site beginning mid to late June and July 2026. The project is estimated to take three to four weeks to complete. Installation of site interpretive signage will follow later this fall.
Nikkei No Haka Cemetery and the adjacent Chinese Cemetery will remain open throughout the project, although certain areas within the grounds will be temporarily closed during construction.
The project is one component of a larger $352,000 grant from the Japanese Canadian Legacy Society. Other components include conservation on of the headstones also at the Nikkei No Haka Cemetery, construction of a park shelter and other landscape improvements at No 1 Japanese Town Historic Site in Coal Creek Historic Park, and interpretive signage at Nikkei Park and along the North Wellington Colliery Trail, located just north of the Cumberland Peace Park.
