Solport Park was transferred to the Village as part of Phase 7 of the Coal Valley Estates subdivision.
Best accessed from Solport Street at Kentmere Avenue, the park is approximately 0.9 acres in size and is currently made up of young forest with multi-use trails.
Future improvements and additions to this new park space are underway. Please see below for updates and information.
2023 Park Development Update:
Village staff are working to develop concept designs for a small playground area and other minor park amenities based on the neighbourhood feedback received in the 2020 public engagement process. Funding for construction of the playground will then be considered as part of the Council’s 2024-2028 Financial Planning process in fall 2023.
2022 Park Development Update:
BC Wildfire volunteered crew time to complete forest management and wildfire abatement works in the spring. This is used to thin out the dead and dying trees in the park and allow the remaining trees to grow more vigorously. Village staff followed these works in the fall by building new trails through the park which provide better access for strollers, bikes, and children walking to school. One of the old trail alignments was turned into a junior bike trail, which was named “Banana Peel” by a local youth after a public naming contest. It includes small mountain bike features for young riders to learn and play on.
2020 Community Engagement Update:
Beginning in 2020, Village staff began a public engagement process to help identify community priorities for Solport Park. The input received pointed to the following preferences for the park, including:
- Improvements to the trail network and accessibility,
- Putting in park amenities; and
- Forest management, including wildfire abatement.
Requested improvements to the trail system include a multi-use pathway connection, an accessible trail that connects the Penrith Avenue extension, and a loop trail in the upper area of the park.
Infrastructure for small children was identified as a key priority for park amenities. Common suggestions included a natural playground, a pump track and swing set. Smaller item requests considered the provision of doggy bags, a dog waste bin and a garbage can.
Forest management within the park was also requested as a means of fostering and protecting the health of the forest into the future.
Details on the input provided by the community, including the results of the public survey are available within the Public Engagement Summary for Solport Park Improvements.
