2705 Dunsmuir Structure Fire Update

Posted on

On August 16, 2026 at approximately 2130 hours, Cumberland Fire Rescue was dispatched to an alarm activation indicating smoke at Dodge City Cycles at 2705 Dunsmuir Avenue. Upon arrival, crews rapidly confirmed and reported a working structure fire.

With the primary concern of life safety, the fire engine arrived and crews initiated an offensive fire attack to reduce the fires spread and protect nearby exposures. Due to the size and complexity of the incident, mutual aid was requested from Courtenay to provide additional personnel. The fire started on the fire floor and spread to the small roof. Full access and control of the fire took some time.

The maximum call out of volunteer firefighters provided the personnel required to safely manage the incident. An estimated 24 firefighters attended on scene to effectively control and manage the fire while maintaining adequate personnel for fire attack, exposure protection, support operations, and firefighter safety. One Cumberland firefighter member sustained minor injuries during the fire and was transported to the hospital as a precaution to ensure their safety and wellbeing. The firefighter has since returned home and is doing well and is expected to be back in service shortly. We appreciate everyone’s concern and support for our member and their family.

The investigation has been completed and the cause of the fire has been identified as a lithium battery.

A reminder for everyone to avoid leaving electric batteries charging overnight while unattended. Being present while charging can help you detect any issues early and may help prevent a fire. Stay safe and take care when charging lithium batteries.
