Are Your Trees Drooping?
Posted on
This summer watch young trees on your property for signs of drought stress like drooping leaves and poor leaf colour. A water-stressed tree is an easy target for pests and diseases.
Watering deeply once or twice a week with a tree bag, slow drip from a hose, or micro-irrigation will help the tree get established and stay healthy. A new tree should be watered with about 50 litres each week in dry weather (about 15 gallons a week) which would cost pennies a week (residential water consumption charge is $0.66 per m3). An established tree may also need a bit of water during drought to keep it healthy.
Be sure to water early in the morning or in the evening to conserve soil moisture. During stage 1 and stage 2 water restrictions, you can water trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables on any day with a sprinkler between 4 am and 10 am and between 7 pm to 10 pm, and on any day at any time if watering is done by hand-held container or a hose equipped with a shut-off nozzle.
