Bear Safety Advisory: Bevan Road Area

Residents are advised to use extra caution in the Bevan Road area after a bear injured a person who was walking an unleashed dog in Cumberland.
The Conservation Officer Service contacted the Village of Cumberland to advise of the incident and requested that this notice be disseminated. Residents and visitors are reminded that bears may act defensively when startled, especially when dogs are nearby.
WildSafeBC reminds residents that dogs can increase the risk of conflict with bears, particularly when dogs are off leash or not under control. Dogs should be kept leashed and under control at all times when walking in areas where wildlife may be present.
Please take the following precautions:
- Keep dogs leashed and close to you.
- Make noise while walking, especially near blind corners, dense vegetation, or low-visibility areas.
- Travel in groups when possible.
- Carry bear spray, keep it accessible, and know how to use it.
- Watch for signs of bear activity, including fresh scat, tracks, overturned logs, or feeding areas.
- Never approach, feed, or attempt to haze a bear.
If you encounter a bear, stay calm, back away slowly, and give the bear plenty of space.
