Campfires Permitted in the Village and Cumberland Fire Protection Area

Small recreational campfires no larger than 0.5m (1.5 ft) in diameter will again be permitted in the Village of Cumberland and the Cumberland Fire Protection District starting July 3, 2026 at 12 noon. The Cumberland Fire Protection Area includes parts of Royston and some properties on Comox Lake Road and in Bevan.

Recreational campfire permits issued by the Village of Cumberland for the 2026 year are valid while open burning is permitted. If you have a 2026 recreational fire permit there is no need to reapply.

Small recreational campfires must burn clean dry wood and

  • Be no larger than 0.5m (1.5 ft) in diameter
  • Be contained within a CSA approved fire appliance or a fire ring fitted with a screen of 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) or smaller mesh to restrict any sparks or flying debris
  • Be located at least 1.5m from any vegetation or combustible material
  • Be located at least 3m from any building, structure or fuel supply tank
