Changes to Cumberland’s Financial Assistance in Recreation program

Posted on

Earlier this month, Village Council adopted changes to Cumberland’s recreation financial assistance programs that will give low-income families greater access to recreation programs and make access to recreation across the region more accessible to residents of all ages.

There are two prongs to these programs:

1. Financial Assistance in Recreation (FAIR)
The recent change to Cumberland’s FAIR program, available exclusively to Village of Cumberland residents, gives qualifying residents a $350 credit that can be used toward a 50% discount on registered recreation programs. This credit applies retroactively to programs beginning on or after July 1. Successful applicants are also automatically enrolled in the Comox Valley Regional District’s PLAY program, which provides access to drop-in and registered programs offered at the CVRD Sports & Aquatic centres.

2. Leisure for Everyone Accessibility Program (LEAP)
Qualifying Comox Valley youth ages 18 and under are eligible for 52 free admissions in each of the four participating jurisdictions (the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, Village of Cumberland and CVRD) plus enrolment in the CVRD’s PLAY program. The recent change to this program is that, effective January 1, 2023, LEAP will be expanded to residents of all ages.

Eligibility and How to Apply

Families that meet Statistics Canada’s Low Income Measure are eligible for assistance (details on cut-offs can be found on the application form). For simplicity, there is a single application form for all Comox Valley recreation financial assistance programs, including LEAP, FAIR and PLAY, as well as Courtenay’s RAP and Comox’s TRIP programs. Applications can be submitted at any municipal or Regional District recreation centre in the Comox Valley. Complete details and a link to the application form can be found on our Recreation Financial Assistance page, by calling 250.336.2231 or by dropping by the Cumberland Recreation Centre at 2665 Dunsmuir Avenue.
