Community Asked to Provide Input on Vacation Rentals

Posted on

The Village of Cumberland is reviewing its vacation rentals regulations and is seeking community input.

Residents and business owners are invited to take the short, 10-minute survey by February 7, 2022 or attend an on-line meeting on February 2nd or February 3rd.

Over the past decade, the number of vacation rentals has grown significantly, raising concern about their impact on the availability of long-term rental housing in the Village. At the same time, as Cumberland does not have any hotels, vacation rentals play an important role in retaining tourists in Cumberland for over-night stays and visits to local businesses. For many tourists, vacation rentals are the preferred choice of accommodation.

“We hope to hear from residents, vacation rentals operators and businesses in the Village to help us update our vacation rental regulations to strike the right balance,” says Mayor Leslie Baird.

The purpose of reviewing the vacation rentals regulations review is to understand their impact, both positive and negative, and to have a conversation about regulatory changes that balance the protection of long-term rental housing and the growth of a strong local tourism sector.

The online survey is posted online and is open until Monday, February 7, 2022. Paper copies are available at the Village office.

Online meetings will be held on Wednesday, February 2 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. and Thursday, February 3 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. To register and receive a meeting link, email planning@nullcumberland.ca. The meetings will begin with a presentation about different ways that municipalities can regulate vacation rentals, followed by questions and discussion.

Complete the survey and keep informed as the project progresses.
