The Village of Cumberland and CUPE Local 556 are announcing the ratification of a new three-year collective agreement following votes by both parties.
The agreement was reached following a thorough bargaining process, resulting in a mutually acceptable outcome that provides stability for employees and supports continued delivery of services to the community.
The new collective agreement is retroactive to January 1, 2025 and is in place until December 31, 2027. It includes general wage increases of 5 percent in the first year, 5 percent in the second year, and 4 percent in the third year. The parties also agreed to benefit enhancements and improvements that strengthen clarity and consistency within the collective agreement language. These updates support effective day-to-day operations and help ensure a well-defined labour-management framework for the years ahead.
“We’re pleased to have reached an agreement that helps address the affordability pressures our members are facing while also improving services for residents and businesses,” said CUPE 556 President Sonya Jenssen. “We appreciate the constructive discussions at the table and the focus on finding practical solutions. We look forward to continuing to work with the Village to provide strong, reliable public services.”
Mayor Vickey Brown noted the significance of reaching an agreement and said, “Cumberland Council is very pleased that we were able to come to a fair agreement with our employees that recognizes the increased cost of living here and provides decent employee benefits, while still considering the impacts on taxpayers who are also feeling this pinch. We sincerely appreciate Village employees and their outstanding service to our growing community. We are so happy that the new agreement has been reached before the holiday break.”
Both the Village of Cumberland and CUPE Local 556 recognize the effort that went into the bargaining process and look forward to maintaining a constructive working relationship throughout the term of the agreement.
