Final round of engagement for the Cumberland Climate Action Plan

Posted on

The Village of Cumberland is set to present proposed climate actions to the community that will help the Village reach its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

“We are reaching the final stages of our Climate Action Plan,” says Mayor Vickey Brown. “Thank you to all the residents who have taken the time to give us feedback on this plan. Community participation ensures that this is truly a “Made in Cumberland” solution. If you have feedback on our Climate Action Plan, or want to know what actions are being proposed, please attend our May engagement events.”

Two engagement sessions are being held this May. The first one is on Thursday, May 2, 2024, from 4:30-7:00pm at the Village Council Chambers at 2675 Dunsmuir Avenue. The second one is an online discussion on May 7, 2024, from 12:00-1:00pm via Zoom. Please email planning@nullcumberland.ca for the meeting link.

During these sessions, residents are invited to view the proposed actions, comment on them, identify any gaps they see and share their implementation priorities. Some of the highlights from the proposed actions include:

  • Support for 2050 as the target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Adopt the Zero Carbon Step Code and update associated policy and bylaws to require
new buildings, facilities, and infrastructure to be energy efficient and zero carbon.
  • Support retrofits of existing homes to clean energy use and better energy efficiency
  • Expand availability of EV charging stations for public use.
  • Complete and implement a Drought Response Plan.
  • Protection of the urban forest and minimize the development of forests.
  • Fire smart training for the community.
  • Land use planning with the aim to reduce car dependence.

These actions have been developed by the Village of Cumberland project team based on engagements session with residents in February, attended by close to 65 residents. Valuable input was gathered through topic specific poster boards and round table discussions.

After the upcoming May engagement events, the information presented will be available at engagecomoxvalley.ca/climate-action-plan to allow those that couldn’t make either event to review the proposed actions and submit comments online. Following that, the next step will be to present the Climate Action Plan to Council for final review and adoption.
