Gymnasium will be closed temporarily starting July 8

Posted on

The gymnasium at the Cumberland Recreation Centre will be temporarily closed for approximately three weeks starting July 8 as we carry out some important facility improvements. All other facilities and amenities, including the fitness studio, squash courts, Cultural Centre and commercial kitchen, will remain open. Registrants in registered programs that are affected by this closure will receive an email informing them of any changes.

To protect the health and safety of gymnasium users the Village has been working with hazardous materials specialists to address lead-containing paint found in the upper walls and ceiling of the gymnasium. While it has been determined to be low risk, Village staff have been monitoring these areas regularly to respond to any paint that may have fallen to the ground. Now we are taking proactive steps to fully remediate the space and ultimately refresh the gymnasium.

As a reminder, the fitness studio, squash courts and Cultural Centre will all remain open during this period. However, anyone who uses a Cumberland Recreation membership for gymnasium-based programs and wishes to put it on hold for the duration of the closure can do so by emailing recreation@cumberland.ca or calling 250.336.2231.

Upon the gymnasium’s re-opening, which we anticipate will be in late July, the upper walls of the gymnasium are expected to be temporarily bare while we await a full restoration in 2026. Your patience and understanding are appreciated as Village staff work to maintain our facilities as welcoming spaces for all residents.
