Fire Fight May Result in Water Discolouration
Posted on
On Wednesday, September 7 2022, a combined effort on behalf of the Cumberland Fire Department, Courtenay Fire Department and the BC Wildfire Service resulted in the extinguishment of a structure fire at No. 1 Japanese Town, located within Coal Creek Historic Park. Under challenging conditions, the joint response ensured the fire was safely contained and did not spread to the adjacent Cumberland Community Forest lands. Residents are requested to stay away from the area as crews continue to monitor the situation.
Tackling the fire resulted in a considerable use of water and Village residents may experience a slight discoloration in their tap water. Should this occur, residents are advised to run their faucets until they are clear. Despite the potential discoloration, the fire did not result in any impacts to water quality and/or quantity, due to normal levels of water within the Village’s surface water supply.
More information on this event, as well as other implications on the park area will be made available in the coming days.
