Speed Limit Reduction and Traffic Calming Projects

This page was last reviewed on June 11, 2026.

Speed Limit Reduction

Speed limits in the Village core residential and business area will be reduced in 2027 to accompany traffic calming treatments outlined in the 2024 Transportation Master Plan.

Council approved the project on June 8, 2026. The speed reduction will include transition zones along major routes to 40km/h on portions of Cumberland Road, Royston Road, Comox Lake Road and Bevan Road. Once within the Village core, a blanket 30km/h zone will apply. View the Speed Zone Concept Map – June 2026. Read the Speed Reduction Project staff report to Council – June 2026. During the first three years of the speed reduction, the Village will monitor and address any challenges resulting from the speed reduction and present the information to Council when necessary.

Traffic Calming Treatments

Traffic calming treatments support all modes of transportation and can include shared streets, traffic circles, curb extensions, traffic calming curbs, flex stakes, and slow street barriers. View active transportation network design guidelines in section 6.3 of the 2024 Transportation Master Plan.

2025 Traffic Calming Projects:

  • Pedestrian-activated crosswalk on Dunsmuir Avenue by the Recreation Centre
  • Speed reader board on Egremont Avenue school zone
  • New crosswalks on Dunsmuir Avenue at Fifth Street, along with signage and curb extension
  • Gateway traffic calming feature at the west end of Dunsmuir Avenue at the entrance to “Camp Road”
  • A new four-way stop at Kendal Avenue and Forest Hall Road
  • Traffic calming curbs along the Fourth Street corridor and Dunsmuir Avenue

Designs for collector road and local street reconstruction may include:

  • curb bulb outs for crosswalks
  • mid-block pinch points
  • bicycle lanes or shared bicycle lanes
  • traffic circles or raised intersections
  • street connections/crossings that look like driveways
  • multi-use pathways
