Posted on

The Village of Cumberland has been recognized as a carbon neutral community by the Province and Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM). By meeting the goal of corporate carbon neutrality for 2016, Cumberland has been awarded the “Achievement of Carbon Neutrality” for the fourth year in a row. By signing on to the BC Climate Action Charter in 2010, Cumberland committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the community, to becoming carbon neutral, and creating an energy-efficient community. Being a Climate Action signatory is also a commitment to measure and report on greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2016, community emissions amounted to 425 tCO2e (equivalent tonnes of CO2). In order to meet the Climate Action Charter carbon neutral commitment, the Village of Cumberland purchased carbon offsets for the net emissions of 288 tCO2e from the Quadra Island Forest Land Conversion Project located on Quadra Island, BC.
