A Dry Spring Means a Dry Forest

Posted on

Cumberland Fire Rescue is asking Cumberlanders to be cautious and vigilant this spring, both in town and in the forest, due to the early dry weather.

Please keep your eyes open for smoke in our surrounding forests. Reporting fires early is key to wildfire suppression and keeping the Village safe. Report forest fires immediately to 911 or *5555 on your cell phone.

  • For your campfire or backyard recreational fire use a screen of 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) or smaller mesh to restrict any sparks or flying debris, have your campfire in a fire ring, and keep it small – less than 0.5m in diameter
  • Please do not smoke in parks, trails, or anywhere in the forests
  • Cool hot motors and wheel bearings before storing away, including chainsaws and lawnmowers
  • Distinguish cigarettes completely in a fire proof container at home

Look for information on preparing your home and yard for wildfire in this April’s print edition of Currently Cumberland. View the FireSmart Homeowner’s Manual on the Fire Protection Services page.

Please watch cumberland.ca for possible campfire and recreational fire bans if the dry weather continues through the spring. A permit is required for recreational fires.
