BC Hydro LED Street Lighting Program to Begin in the Village
Posted on
The Village has been working with BC Hydro to prepare for BC Hydro’s province-wide LED street light replacement program. The purpose of the program is to comply with environmental PCB regulations and to increase energy efficiency.
In the fall of 2021, staff completed a wattage review of locations to identify where the LED lights could be a lower wattage bulb on many residential streets. Collector and arterial streets and crosswalk locations will receive higher wattage bulbs. LED lights previously installed in the Village will be reviewed by staff to ensure correct wattage.
The Village has also selected 3000K (Kelvin) colour LED lights, which is the closest available option to the amber colour high pressure sodium lights (HPS) currently in the Village.
The program is expected to commence in mid-December 2021 and continue into the new year to replace about 250 pole mounted lights in the Village. Twelve lights will be replaced at a later time when wooden hydro poles are upgraded as well.
As the program commences, staff will work with BC Hydro on reviewing and prioritizing current street light outages to ensure priority replacement for public safety.
Residents may contact BC Hydro directly by email to lightingsupport@bchydro.com to discuss concerns with the program or a particular street light. In your email, please include the BC Hydro number found on the tag on the pole or the civic address closest to the light.
